Course Topics/Goals
- Music cultures of the past and present, in the context of the digital environment
- The relationship of music and multimedia cultures
- Exploration of musical
resources on the web, including sounds, images, text, and other forms of data
- Uses of software in:
- Design of multimedia web sites; basic editing of full and compressed image and sound files
- Creation and
manipulation of MIDI
- Creation of digital music notation
- Scanning of music notation to create image and MIDI sound files
- Searching and retrieving information from digital musical data
- Creation of a multimedia final project using the knowledge and skills acquired in the course
Requirements
- Acquisition of proficiency with image and sound file manipulation,
web page creation, and other
techniques of multimedia production
- Construction of a personal web site and a multimedia project or "paper" which
analyzes and describes a body of musical material.
- Hands-on lab exercises, including analysis of music in digital formats, use of search engines, MIDI,
digital music notation, sound files, sound and graphic integration
- Assignments and readings, including digital music publications, copyright, MIDI, digital formats, etc.
- Quizzes; participation in group discussions
Prerequisites: Basic ability to read music notation and to use
a music keyboard.
Basic
familiarity with computers and the Internet. The objectives of this class do
not include music composition
or computer programming, though these
topics may be discussed.
